Unsettled Places — The Bathroom at the End of the Terrace

Every house has a place where certainty begins to thin. Not a secret room. Not an attic or a cellar. Simply somewhere architecture loosens its grip and another way of dwelling quietly begins.

A terrace stretches away from the house until a child pauses beside an outdoor shower tucked into its final corner. Plants lean over the walls without invitation. Vines descend from above, softening brick into foliage. Water waits beneath leaves. The sky has become part of the ceiling.

You tell the child how extraordinary it feels. How exotic. As though someone had carried a fragment of another climate home and forgotten to explain it.

He looks back without conviction.

It is simply where he washes.

Perhaps places become invisible to those who belong to them. Familiarity smooths away astonishment. The extraordinary survives only for those arriving from elsewhere, carrying fresh attention instead of memory.

The dream offers no revelation. No hidden chamber. No dramatic encounter. Only a modest corner where water, weather and stone have entered into an agreement that neither fully controls.

The shower belongs neither to the house nor entirely to the garden. It occupies a threshold. Rain could almost claim it as its own. The walls continue only because climbing plants have not yet persuaded them otherwise.

Perhaps the soul is less interested in monuments than thresholds. Not the cathedral. Not the summit. A place where inside slowly becomes outside without anyone noticing exactly when it happened.

There are rooms within every life that become too familiar to be seen. Their beauty disappears beneath repetition. Attention wanders elsewhere, searching for distant landscapes while overlooking the quiet geography already waiting beyond the final doorway.

The child cannot understand your admiration because he has inherited the place. You cannot understand his indifference because you encounter it for the first time.

Between those two gazes something almost imperceptible appears. Not meaning. Not interpretation. Only attention.

And perhaps that is enough.

Notitia means attending to.

The Unsettled Places series explores those landscapes where perception arrives before explanation, where ordinary places quietly resist becoming ordinary, and where careful attention uncovers another dimension of dwelling. These essays form part of The Book of Glamorous Unbecoming, an ongoing collection of reflections on atmosphere, art, dream, and the vertical life.
